Bread, no matter the form, is one of the most universally eaten foods. Bread is found in every culture, from naans to arepas, and is a part of our daily lives.
Its versatility and popularity begged the question: What are upper school students’ favorite types of bread? How often do they eat it? What’s their favorite topping?
For this survey, 60 upper school students were randomly selected using a random number generator. Of the 60, 39 participated in the survey, and they answered a series of multiple-choice questions.

When asked about their favorite type of bread, the majority of the participants said that they prefer sourdough, whereas brioche, multigrain, and rye seem to be less popular among students.
What makes sourdough so appealing? According to Chef’s Resource, what sets sourdough apart from other breads is how it’s prepared.
Wild yeast interacts with the lactic acid bacteria that is naturally present in flour, so the dough ferments over a longer period. The yeast produces organic acids like lactic acid and acetic acid, which gives sourdough its characteristic “sourness.”
Samara Cohen ‘26, who picked sourdough as her favorite bread, said, “I love it because it’s so squishy and satisfying to eat. [Sourdough is] an easy snack because you don’t need to put anything on it; the bread is the moment.”

Butter is the most popular topping for bread. According to Butterdish, people like butter because of its savory flavor, and butter “rounds out dishes and creates a depth that makes food more satisfying. When combined with salt, butter becomes a natural flavor enhancer, intensifying sweetness in baked goods and richness in savory dishes.”

Bread shows up in students’ diets most days of the week, with nearly 60% students saying they eat it a few times a week and 30.8% saying they eat it every day. Students most likely eat bread as often as they do because bread is common in most meals.
| What meal do you usually eat bread? | Responses |
| Breakfast | 21 |
| Lunch | 12 |
| Every meal | 3 |
| Dinner | 3 |
This chart shows which meal students typically eat bread, with the majority responding that they eat bread with their breakfast. This is likely because toasted bread or bagels are a common breakfast food. Toast may also be more common among students because it’s a quick, easy meal they can eat and prepare in a timely manner, so they are not late to school.
With a total of 12 responses, the second most common meal for students to eat bread with is lunch. When you’re not at home to prepare yourself an intricate meal, you’re running late to school, or you may not have access to a microwave, it’s easier to go with something that fits into a sandwich bag and store for later. This is the most likely reason that students, who are constantly on the go and need an easy meal, might have bread for lunch.
Dillan Shafer ‘27 said, “I have eaten a sandwich for lunch almost every weekday since preschool.”
Simply, what type of bread you like, how often you eat it, and your favorite toppings all come down to your own personal preferences. One thing remains constant: bread, no matter the type or toppings, is everywhere in student lives.

My favorite bread is probably sourdough. I think it’s my favorite because it goes with anything you want. My favorite thing to make with it is a bacon, egg, and cheese. I also recently started to eat croissants. I didn’t like them for a very long time, but earlier this year I went to a cafe in the city with my friend and got one, and it was really good. Now, whenever the farmhouse has them, I try to get one. I think bread is the perfect snack because there are so many different versions of it, and it’s always good.

My favorite type of bread is probably a croissant. I really love croissants because of their buttery flavor and flaky texture. They taste really good, especially on bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches from Dunkin Donuts. Also, I really love chocolate croissants because the bread pairs really well with the melty chocolate. I like to get croissants from the farmhouse. I am also a fan of focaccia. My mom and I make focaccia sometimes and it tastes so good. I love the salty taste and the sort of crunchy top with soft inside. I also like to have focaccia with soup and to dip it in.

Very interesting article, didn’t know there was a trend in bread eating. My favorite bread type is sourdough baguettes, mostly by itself but sometimes with butter too. I have a lot of nostalgia from going to the Cheesecake Factory with my family and they would give out baguettes as an appetizer. I also just like them because they have a good texture, with the crispy outside and softer inside, and they don’t need much to be good. Bagels are good too, but I’m a little particular with which stores I buy from. But honestly, I’m not particularly picky about Bread types, though I’m not particularly fond of dense bread. Bread is like one of those weird things where you don’t really think about eating it, like I don’t go “wow I’m so excited to eat this bread” as opposed to “wow I’m so excited to eat this sandwich”. Overall, Bread is good. Eat more bread.

My favorite types of bread are sourdough and ciabatta. I think it’s something about breads that have a slight tanginess and crunch that makes me a fan. I also think about how bread toasting is important. Sourdough toast is my favorite. There’s just the perfect amount of crunchiness of the outermost crust and sponginess of the inside. It’s a perfect snack, breakfast, and sandwich bread — and the same for ciabatta. They get a 10 from Kylie.

My favorite type of bread is sourdough, just like the amazement of the study body, it seems. One type of bread that many don’t talk about is black Russian bread. I grew up eating this bread with almost everything, in sandwiches, soups, and even just as a little morning breakfast. This bread is called Borodinsky bread, and it is considered one of the healthiest breads you can eat. Hr bread is heavy in rye, and according to BrooksGrain, it benefits the human body in many ways, from weight loss, helps prevent cancer, and has a healthy heart. I think everyone should try this bread, although it might seem intimidating at first. I promise you it’s delicious.

I don’t think I could pick my favorite bread, yet I really love sourdough and pumpernickel. I think bread is a stable food to have in everyday life since it can be used as a breakfast, snack throughout the day, and used in lunch and dinner. I think sometimes we realize how much we use bread as well, along with other foods in our household. I also think all bread is good, but I really like toasted sourdough holding a sandwich, and even the small loaves of pumpernickel at Outback.

The baguette’s simplicity and texture all contribute to why this style of French bread is among my favorites. Unlike many other types of bread that include many different ingredients or flavors (such as sourdough), baguettes have a very simple and straightforward ingredient list, which helps make them easier to enjoy. Additionally, the combination of a crispy outer shell and an soft insdide creates a nice balance of textures in each slice. The initial “crunch” of biting into the outside shell is a big part of the enjoyment factor when eating a baguette. Due to their size, baguettes are one of the most versatile forms of bread available. Not only can they be used as sandwich bread, but they may also be paired with meals such as pasta or soups or simply enjoyed by itself.

My favorite types of bread are sourdough and croissants. I like sourdough because its unique flavor gives it a lot of character on its own, compared to white bread, for example. “Sour” bread always sounds like a weird concept to me, but I think the fact that it naturally incorporates that flavor makes it enjoyable to eat. On the other hand, I really love croissants. They really stand out to me because, unlike even sourdough, I think they can be eaten all on their own. The large amounts of butter already in croissants make them moist enough to eat and help them become extra crispy and flaky when toasted. I don’t eat sourdough and croissants that often, but whenever I do, I forget how much I like them.

My favorite type of bread is sourdough because it has a unique flavor and texture that stands out from other types. The outside is crispy while the inside is soft and chewy, which makes it really satisfying to eat. I also like the slightly tangy taste that comes from the fermentation process, giving it more depth than regular white bread. Sourdough can be used for many things like sandwiches, toast, or even eaten by itself. It feels more special and homemade compared to other breads. Overall, sourdough is my favorite because it combines great taste and texture all in one type of bread.

My favorite types of bread are sourdough and seedless rye, which align with the article’s findings that sourdough is one of the most popular types among students. I like sourdough because it has more flavor on its own, and it doesn’t need a lot of accoutrements to make it enjoyable. The sort of tangy taste makes it more interesting compared to plainer breads, but it is also plain enough that I like to eat it. I also like rye because it has a distinct flavor, but I do not like seeds in my bread. Both are very good toasted with some salted butter, especially when the outside gets super crispy. I understand why butter was the most popular topping in the survey; it enhances the flavor of the bread. One type of bread I do not like is white bread. This is because it feels too processed and doesn’t have that crispy texture.
