Prom is the most significant event for many high school students in America behind graduation. It marks the end of junior or senior year with a formal dance and celebration.
Prom originated in the 19th century as a formal dinner and dance at universities in the Northeast. Historically at Abington Friends School, we celebrate it around May 2nd each year from 7-10pm.
Prom 2025 was held at the Philmont Country club, and the theme was Enchanted Garden. The ballroom was elegant, spacious, and capable of being customized to the host’s preference. The food at the Philmont Country club included plated dinner and mocktails.
Guests had the option of a garden salad, chicken/eggplant parmesan, sliced sirloin topped with chimichurri or a red wine demi glaze, herb roasted potatoes, and a steamed vegetable medley. For dessert, there were assorted mini cakes.
As guests filtered in, they were greeted with music played by DJ Biscuit and the 360 camera and photo wall. Many were impressed by the scenic views and well-maintained landscaping which created a beautiful backdrop for portraits.
Ariana Ellis-Clarke ’25 was an attendee. Ellis-Clarke said, “Prom was superlative. The venue was much better than last year’s venue, the Franklin Institute. The view at the Philmont was incredible and exciting, the 360 was thoughtful as well.”
The music set the tone for the night, weaving together upbeat pop, hip-hop, and timeless classics, and guests swayed under the light from the moon.
In the weeks leading up to Prom 2025, the committee planned several school-wide fundraisers, including the Kona Ice Truck, Philly pretzel sales, and a pastry pop-up.
Prom 2025 marked the largest turn out of guests in AFS history, coming in at a resounding 200 attendees. We also welcomed friends from other schools.
Throughout the night, friends laughed over shared memories, people danced, and everyone, especially the seniors, soaked in the atmosphere of their final big event of the school year. While some took pictures, others simply enjoyed the ambiance.
In conclusion, Prom 2025 symbolized growing up, celebrating relationships, and enjoying a milestone together as a community.
