With the change of seasons, comes the end of fall sports at AFS and the beginning of winter sports. Many fall sports ended the season on a very high note, including Girls’ Varsity Tennis, which made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2012 and tied for the second-most Friends School League wins in program history.
The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams had strong seasons, playing through many challenging games and emerging victorious for many of them. Varsity Boys Soccer waved goodbye to fourteen seniors this year, which will significantly change the team’s dynamic next year. Varsity Girls Soccer won two out of their last three games, with Angela Stevens ‘24 finishing up her AFS soccer career in the top three all-time players in goals and assists.
Boys and girls cross-country also had a great season, with two top-20 finishers at the Friends School League Championships: Yassmine Wardigee ‘27 finished 18th and Ani Melzer-Surkan ‘28 finished 19th. The boys placed 4th out of the eight teams in the Friends Schools League, which ties them up for the second-best finish in program history. They also had seven runners under 20:50 at the Friends School League Championships for the first time in AFS cross-country history.
After talking to Chet Sutton, the varsity tennis coach, he shares how “proud [he is] of the girls,” expressing “what a good job the girls have done this year, in both practice and matches.”
Sutton’s enthusiastic support of AFS varsity tennis teams over the years instills the Roo team spirit into the teams and allows it to spread throughout athletics and the school. AFS athletics continues to break records and prove that the school excels at academics and sports, which is essential to what we stand for as a community. AFS is set up for success on and off the fields, courts, and tracks with supportive coaches and strong team bonds.
Overall, AFS fall athletics have ended their seasons, keeping and setting their standards even higher for next year. As many seniors leave these teams behind for next year, the community will look forward to seeing how these team dynamics will change for years of future Roos. With Fall teams setting new school records, they have given themselves much to look forward to for next year’s seasons!
