This December, a brand-new tradition will debut at AFS: The Winter Art Fair.
Every year, seniors in visual arts classes are celebrated at a culminating, end of year Senior Art Showcase. However, there aren’t many other nights dedicated to Upper School visual art students, despite the vibrant visual arts program the school rightfully boasts.
Community Design Club clerk Maya Gest ‘26 started pondering this issue last year, when they took over the club formerly known as Mural Club.
Gest said, “I think that, at AFS, we’re a really theater-centered school, but we have a lot of visual art students, and I
think that it would be nice to uplift their voices and their skills to the broader community.”
An engaging and exciting evening filled with art, holiday spirit, and fun for the wider AFS community will welcome AFS students from all divisions on December 18. This event will not only kickstart the winter season with free food and beautiful art pieces, but it will also offer a chance to buy last-minute handcrafted holiday gifts at affordable prices.
So how can student artists get involved?
Easy!
There are QR codes on fliers around the school with a simple form for folks who want to either sell or showcase their work (or both!). The form is due by December 1, so now is a great time to start collecting your favorite pieces for this cozy art show.
If you’ve never displayed your work professionally or sold your crafts, or even if art is just a hobby for you, this is a low-stress opportunity to start.
An upcoming workshop (date to be announced) is designed to help artists with the “pricing, packaging, and marketing” of their items for sale, said Ruby Schumm ‘26, co-clerk of the CDC.
Schumm said, “I think it’s a great time for students to really take pride in their artwork in a way that they don’t necessarily have the opportunity to other times in the year.”
For questions and support, the clerks of CDC and the Creative Visionaries Club will be available to help artists every step of the way.
Upper, Middle, and Lower School students and faculty are encouraged to come and bring their families to this enchanting and restful holiday evening. Mark your calendars, because the best way to get this new tradition off to an incredible start is by showing up!
